Before the AC electric era, the SS4 locomotives were the predominant power on the Datong-Qinhuangdao coal heavy haul railway. Operating between Shanxi coal mines and the Qinhuangdao coal port, these locomotives, consisting of A and B units, can sometimes be seen in quadruples, pulling over 200 C80 wagons with a total weight of over 20,000 tons. The C80 wagons, specifically designed for coal transportation on the Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway, boast the largest loading capacity of all China's open wagons. Constructed with rivetted aluminum and featuring a drop center design, these wagons maximize capacity and efficiency.
Equipped with rotary couplers and spring air pipes, they are easily unloaded at the rotary dumper in Qinhuangdao coal harbor. While the all-steel C80B wagons are gradually replacing the C80 wagons due to cost considerations, the C80 wagons' innovative design features will continue to influence future railway transport developments.
