- This book is an introduction to predicate logic. Predicate logic studies arguments whose validity depends on words such as everything, something, and nothing. The book contains five chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction to predicate logic. Chapter 2 is about syntax. It deals with several predicate languages; it describes how these are constructed and how they relate to different natural languages. Chapter 3 is about semantics. What do different symbolic signs mean? What are the truth conditions for our different sentences? Chapter 4 deals with proof theory. Among other things, it goes through how to determine whether an argument is logically valid or not. It mentions three different proof/inference methods: axiomatic systems, natural deduction, and semantic tableaux. The chapter contains many examples. If you want to learn more about logic, it can be helpful to try to master all of these different methods. Chapter 5 contains some general information about predicate logic and more exercises.Predicate logic is an extension of propositional logic, which is described in the book Propositional Logic: An Introduction. To understand the material in this book, the reader should first have studied Proposition Logic: An Introduction or some similar book.Predicate Logic: An Introduction contains many exercises that can help the reader practice their logical abilities.
